Description

Between 1970 and 1994, the Society ran a series of Annual Lectures entitled “ The Walter Gratwicke Memorial Lecture”. These lectures were subsequently printed in booklet form and are still available to purchase.

Gratwicke Paper no 12 1981.

This booklet starts by detailing the legislation in the 1860s and 1870s that allowed the steam tramways to be developed. It then covers the technical development of the steam trams themselves and the companies that manufactured them, starting in 1871. It includes 50 photographs and 9 drawings. There are also lists of tramway undertakings in Britain which ran regular steam operated passenger services, and steam tram experiments, trials and demonstrations.
