This book is about the origins, development and consolidation of the tramway systems which eventually became the London County Council Tramways. It describes in some detail the many stages of construction, maintenance and day-to-day working of the several companies which were the forerunners of the LCC Tramways. The history is divided into two parts, the South London System being dealt with in this volume, together with some supporting services.

There are chapters on the separate companies, The London Tramways Company Limited, The Kennington & Streatham Cable Line, The South Eastern Metropolitan, The London, Deptford and Greenwich, The London Camberwell & Dulwich, The Woolwich & South East London, The South London and the London Southern Tramways Companies.

There are also chapters on the formation of the LCC, the electrical construction and the stages of opening of the various routes. It then goes on to detail the rolling stock, routes and power generation
